ACNM to hold press conference on cesarean section issue

Dear Friends,

The ACNM is holding a “media advisory” "The Untold Story of Cesarean Birth: Risks from Complications Understated and Misunderstood" with “National Data on Women's Views & Experiences.” This event is taking place one week prior to the National Institutes for Health (NIH) “state of the science” conference on “Cesarean Sections by Maternal Request.” One purpose is to inform the media concerning information about cesarean sections that is unlikely to be included in the NIH report. Citizens for Midwifery is one of several named supporters of ACNM’s media advisory event, and CfM Board members also will be attending the NIH conference the following week.

You can read the ACNM press release below, or find it at http://www.midwife.org/news.cfm?id=889 (where it is available in PDF format).

Because this media advisory, and also the NIH conference results the following week, are likely to get national media attention, there are several things you can do to help.

· If you have any media contacts, please make sure they get a copy of the ACNM release and ask them to report the information.

· Please be informed about the issues related to this topic. CfM will be posting a Position Statement in the next few days (will be linked from the home page www.cfmidwifery.org), and there are now many excellent fact sheets and information available that you can read and also refer your media contacts to, including:

· Keep your eyes peeled for media coverage of these events (ACNM media advisory, NIH conference results), and if possible write letters to the editor in response.
